How to Add Date Formula in Google Sheets

Google Sheets is used for recording our data and data are mostly dated. So add a date formula in google sheets to make your task easy. Even if you're making a google attendance sheet, having a date column is important. Instead of typing a date all the time, you can create a formula for the entire column. Before learning it to apply to the entire column. let us learn how to do it for one particular cell.

Add Date Formula in Google Sheets: 5 Steps

Step-1 Open Google Sheets App: To use the date formula of google sheets you must have the application first. Open it from your mobile device or download it from the play store.

  • You can go to the search bar of the play store and type in 'google sheets.'
  • On doing that, you will come across an icon of green paper having a tiny fold.
  • Install it and go further with the learning process.

Step-2 Select the Cell: Now, you need to select the cell where you want the date to display. It is advisable to select the first cell of the row or the column where you want dates.

Step-3 Use the fx icon: On choosing the cell, you activate the formatting toolbars. At the bottom of the page, there are two such bars.

  • One is for the formulas and another one is for other editing purposes.
  • The first one is formula one and it has an icon of fx at its left end.
  • Select that to get a list of all the google sheets formulas.

Step-4 Use the Search Icon: You might get lost in the long list and categories of google sheets formulas. So, it is good to use the search option. A little magnifying lens at the right corner. Click on it and type in DATE

Step-5 Use the Formula: On searching for the date formula, you will get the formula. By clicking on it, you will be taken to the formula toolbar with the date formula already written on it.

  • the format is DATE(Year, Month, Day)
  • You have to enter the values and google sheets will convert them into a date.

Now, let us learn how to use it even more efficiently. Make three columns in your sheet. Year, Month, and Day column. Now in the fourth column, use the date formula.

  • For instance, A is the year column, B is the month column, and C is the day column.
  • In the Date column D, add formula DATE(A1, B1, C1)
  • The formula will take values from A, B, and C columns and return the entire date.
  • Now, once you enter all the dates, months, and years in the first three columns, you can drag down the first formula cell of the D column till the end.
  • Thus, you can apply the date formula to the entire column.

And did you know, you can even change google sheets' date format if the year, month, day format is not comfortable for you. Try using it and see if it helps in increasing your work efficiency.
