How to Check Google Sheets Edit History

You must check google sheets edit history when you have shared google sheets with others to edit. This will help you be on top of the changes made and keep the authority of undoing them in your hand. Whenever there is some huge mistake or unwanted edits, you can hold the person accountable by checking the edit history. It is simply about knowing who made the edits in the end. It is very easy and can be done in just four steps.

Check Google Sheets Edit History: 4 Steps

Step-1 Open the Application: On your android device, open the application of google sheets application. If you do not have it, go to the play store application and download it.

  • On opening the application, you see varied sheets you worked on in the past.
  • From that, select the one that is shared with others and for which you want to check changes.

Step-2 Click on the 'three-dots' Option: On opening the desired sheet, look for the three-dots option in the top-right corner. It looks like a vertical line that is with dots. Click on it to go further.

Step-3 Click on Details: By clicking the three-dots option, a menu appears for different file settings. Here, look at the details option.

  • From that list itself, you can copy the link of sheets or save google sheets as PDF. 
  • But as want details as of now, we will click on the details option.
  • This option has all the necessary details of our sheet.
  • It specifies the size of our sheet and its exact location among our files.
  • It also gives the details of the creator and the date of its creation.

Step-4 Check the Last Modified: Just below the owner information, you can see an information reading 'Modified.' Under that, there will be the name of the person who made edits to the sheet last.

  • Thus, like this, you can check google sheets edit history.
  • However, on a mobile phone, you can just see the name of the person who made the latest changes. But not the exact changes that he made.
  • So, for that, you can use a desktop device.

In a window format, google sheets are slightly different. But you do not need to worry as this is the guide just for you. In the desktop version of google sheets, go to the File menu. It is usually the first one in the formatting toolbar. You will see an option called 'Version History.' It is just before the option of making it available offline almost at the end of the sheet. In version history, you can either give a name to the current version so it is easy to retrieve or view the entire history of edit and format of sheets. 

  • Here, you can see exactly who made what changes.
  • You can undo it and get an older version of sheets if necessary.

To conclude, it is important to check the history so that nothing goes wrong. If someone does unnecessary changes and spoils the work, the person must be liable for the mistake.
